Farm & Ranch manager

McGregor Land & Livestock, a historic ranch dating back to pioneer days and headquartered in its own rural village, is looking for a dedicated, enthusiastic person to serve as ranch general manager. The ranch produces wheat, barley & alfalfa on 14,000 arable acres. Extensive range & canyon country adjacent is grazed by 750 cow/calf pairs each year. The hardworking team on the ranch, with its related agricultural business, has earned many honors, including National Family Business of the Year. Honored by the Secretary of State several years as one of the oldest enterprises in the state, the ranch has a tradition of innovation and teammates on board for many years of dedicated service.

Job Responsibilities

  • Plan, direct, and coordinate the management of the farm and ranch
  • Hire, train, and supervise farm workers who carry out the day-to-day activities of the farm and ranch. Help them when necessary
  • Supervise planting, cultivating, harvesting, calving, and animal husbandry
  • Oversee hay operation, including but not limited to raking, baling and storage
  • Manage irrigation of alfalfa fields in the river valley
  • Financial and marketing activities regarding insurance, FSA, USDA and DNR programs

Required Skills

  • Good working knowledge and experience raising crops and livestock
  • Experience supervising a crew, working with farm and ranch foremen
  • Agronomic and range management skills
  • Knowledge of farm, program, crop insurance, conservation and other duties required in ongoing management
  • Experience and ability to market the crops we grow
  • Ability to show sound independent judgment, while working with lead family member based in company headquarters in Colfax
  • Dedication and pride in a job well done

We provide a house in our village, which also features the historic general store – now a community center with ranch offices in a separate section. The ranch “hotel”, now used at times for visitors to town or small events; a post office, a community park and a dozen well-cared for houses for fellow employees or McGregor family members.
